Roos Roast is my happy place. Independent coffee roaster with a small shop/cafe out S. Industrial Highway. If Ann Arbor has any counterculture left, Roos Roast wants to be at the heart of it. Clean, but not sanitized. Great art and info about community events on the walls. (This afternoon I learned from their walls that Ann Arbor has a community book arts lab, who knew?) Like everyone else, I love their Lobster Butter Love roast. Also appreciate that they carry local eggs. Music in the coffeeshop is as variable as the baristas' haircuts so you take your chances if you're planning to study, but all comers are welcome.

I seriously love this place! The coffee, the zines, the gluten free muffins. These people really care about the quality of their coffee, but in a really unpretentious way. Buy their coffee in bulk that they just roasted in the back or just get a single cup, either way sit inside and enjoy it. You can tell the staff love being there, & so do I.
(5)Jason C.
Everyone loves the Lobster Butter. It's good stuff, but I like the Cowboy Blend better. Roos is a great quirky little cafe to have in my neighborhood, and I hope they don't get too big and leave!
(5)N G.
went there for coffee and something sweet. Severely disappointed on the something sweet - asked for a scone heated up with butter and they had no butter. And the scone was salty. But on the plus side, the hot chocolate was amazing. My friend's beverage wasnt so lucky. She complained and they replaced it. Hot Chocolate is a safe bet. Dont try their sweet - treats :(

(Edit: This morning I went there and they had fresh baked delicious GLUTEN FREE banana date walnut muffins! The first time I've had a muffin in five years. So good! This place gets better all the time.) I love that they make the coffee to order in the style of an Americano. It is very good, and the baristas are all pleasant, interesting people. The employees obviously enjoy working there and it seems almost like they are all family. My favorite thing about it is how there is something neat to look at in every corner. It kind of reminds me of my favorite places in Austin, packed with culture and creativity.
(5)Isabelle C.
3 stars for quality of almond milk latte (too strong, thin, not creamy); 5 stars for weird creative space, outdoor seating, and not being too crowded and having easy free parking; 4 stars for not-totally friendly but friendly enough baristas. Got coffee twice here, both times same exact experience. Don't get the Jan bar- overly sweet mess of a treat. Don't bother checking in to unlock free offer - catch is you have to buy TWO bags of coffee beans (two!).
(4)M A.
Decaf, doctor's orders. Thank you, John, for decaffing the Lobster Butter Love. The best.
(5)Albert T.
Great coffee, especially the Lobster Butter Love. Only drawback is that it's a little out of the way.
(4)Katherine W.
I love introducing all my friends to John & his awesome coffee shop, with the BEST coffee in town, without exception.
(5)Matt E.
Best coffee in Ann Arbor. Probably the best simple cup of coffee I have had. free wifi. Very nice staff. Cozy environment. Unique and fun menu.
(5)Jeff B.
This coffee is so very very good. That is known. What has become a pleasant surprise is how good their food selection has become. Just this week i had an amazing breakfast burrito that was filling and full of flavor. Keep up the good work!
(5)F B.
Your classic non-traditional Ann Arbor coffee shop in the middle of an eclectic neighborhood mix of industrial warehouses and private homes. Tattoos, pierced earlobes and piercing galore to enjoy while waiting for your cup of joe. The staff is nice, the coffee can be a bit too acidic but they do good business. Some of the prices I find a bit too steep for just 250g worth of coffee. One of their biggest clients is the local Google office.
(3)Danny W.
Lobster Butter Love is my favorite coffee of all time. This shop also has the best selection of home-brewing equipment I've seen: AeroPresses, Clever Drippers, and ceramic grinders that are well beyond my personal caffeine demands. Some would say that they're beans are too expensive, but if you believe that great beans are worth it, then you have to try Roos Roast.
(5)Patrick T.
Lovely quaint little place with excellent coffee. Try the lobster butter blend, of course.
(4)Clark F.
Awesome coffee if you can find it around town, but even better when you can drink it at the source. A little inconvenient to get to, but the ambience is nice and the lobster butter IS love.
(5)Allison B.
Great coffee, great people, great place. Nice big table to play games while sipping a latte. We'll be back!
(5)Shawna S.
This is a fantastic local coffee joint. . I originally tasted this coffee at the farmers market and then searched for their location in town. When driving to the location, you would not expect the best coffee in Ann Arbor to be found in a small shop off Industrial Highway. The baristas are very friendly and engaging. The owner is often on site and is more than happy to bring you to the back and show you the trade of coffee roasting. The coffee is really fresh and delicious (I have had both the brewed/drip coffee and lattes). One quick tip: if you purchase 2 pounds of beans, they will give you a free drip coffee on the spot - a nice "thanks" to the customer. I highly recommend the lobster butter love - it is one awesome coffee! Another quick tip: Purchase the beans at the store or Ann Arbor farmers market - other vendors (Whole Foods) marks the price up considerably!
(5)Josh R.
Get the Ancho Chili Mocha. It's spicilicious! Friendly people and great coffee. What more could you ask for?
(4)Jeanie S.
Mmmm. Tasty coffee. Bought a lb of the Lobster Butter Love blend, and it's a smooth, mellow treat in the morning. No bitterness, just an unusually smooth cup of coffee. Super mellow place to have a cup and a biscotti. Friendly employees. No attitude. Yea!
(4)Judy G.
Dropped in today for the first time. Had a fabulous walnut muffin and great coffee. Good feeling here.
(5)Leo C.
cheesygrapes.blogspot.co… I've became sort of a coffee snob when my sister-in-law gave me a French Press for Christmas. Before then I was drinking Auto-drip Allegro Bulk -Coffee from Whole Foods and non-fat lattes from Starbucks. Don't get me wrong I still enjoy Allegro, but RoosRoast is now my "coffee before a 12 hour shift at the hospital" or "coffee as I relax on my days off!" Lobster Butter Love is delicious and I'm so glad I tried it, however that tasting led me to Rich French Neighbor and Mother Pheasant Plucker which are now both my favorites! Read the rest of my review (Above Link). Thanks! Leo C.
(5)Hope D.
Awesome ancho pancho mocha - and can be made diabetic-friendly (yay!) with Splenda... Their cold brew is also delightfully smooth. And the folks who run it are way cool.
(5)Paul G.
Roos Roast is not only a purveyor of the finest in house roasted coffee around. They know what to do with all of their many delicious roasts. I will admit to being biased as I count some if the shop's employees among my dearest friends, but I could easily get coffee anywhere else when I visit ann arbor. The fact is, I don't. Equally apealing are the generally green and relatively sustainable business practices. I can promise any reader that these people care about the earth and do what they can to be responsible passengers on our big blue spaceship. This includes but is not limited to riding bikes year round and engaging in serious interdependence with local farms and artisans. If you like good fresh roasted coffee, go in and get you some.
(5)Sarms J.
Hands down Ann Arbor's best coffee shop, and AA has many. Super friendly staff and great coffee. Lots of cool coffee products too. Bought my mom and mate the french press travel mug, they both LOVED it. Love the single origin blends.
(5)Risa G.
This is seriously one of the best coffee shops ever! The coffee is amazing (my fav is the lobster butter love), the staff is super friendly and on point and the owner, Jon is tops babe;)
(5)Tom B.
What an awesome find! This is a tiny place, but worth seeking out. The barista (and customers!) were very friendly, giving this Ann Arbor newbie some suggestions on places to visit. As noted by others, their "regular coffee" is an Americano, that is, espresso diluted back with water. The result has a great flavor and excellent body. I'll be going back any time I'm in town!
(5)Mike G.
I travel a fair amount for business and am always looking for the holy grail of coffee shops -- delicious brews that are locally roasted, sourced from organic fair trade growers, but most of all a place that is run and staffed by interesting and social people. We are so lucky to have that here at Roos, where the staff people are outgoing, quirky, warm and fun, and they treat every customer like a guest in their home. The cafe is kind of out of the way but we get here pretty often because it's just so good to hang out here. John Roos envisioned the cafe as a place for people to meet and talk with each other, not just open their laptops and disappear into their separate cocoons. We always get into the most interesting conversations. Oh, yeah,,,on top of that, they've tweaked their espresso machine to make the best tasting coffee I've had anywhere. And Rebecca is the best barista on the planet.
(5)S L.
The Lobster coffee roast is their best flavor.
(4)George P.
If you enjoy great coffee, look no further... roasted on-site, Roos Roast coffee is a java addict's paradise. Only one complaint... limited seating and dim lighting leaves one feeling claustrophobic in the storefron. nothing is perfect, but Roos Roast is as close as possible!
(4)Kelly S.
Super smooth coffee, super cool vibe, super friendly people. Its easy to pick up a pound at the Farmer's market or Whole Foods, but don't forget about the store front. I love dropping in here! It's worth the experience.
(5)A H.
Roos Roast somehow manages to taste better than any other coffee I've tried in Ann Arbor. I wouldn't go there to study, because the space isn't very big, but to swing by on my way to or from work is the most convenient. I like that they seem to want to get to know their customers and strike up a conversation (even early in the morning) instead of some other elitest coffee places in Ann Arbor who don't act like they have the time of day to smile at you let alone serve you coffee. Yay Roos Roast!
(5)Katherine A.
I stop in here frequently to buy coffee for home (I am a coffee geek through and through). I always grab a bag of one of their single origins because I love lighter roasts, although their Lobster Butter Love is divine. Sometimes on my way to work I'll get a coffee and a slice of banana bread. Their little shop is so great! They even sell the burlap sacks that coffee comes in, which I've purchased and used to wrap a coffee-themed gift in once.
(5)Kate B.
A bit of background...I used to be obsessed with coffee - two pots a day, couldn't function without it. I've now been caffeine free for 12 years, but I HUMMM with praise for RoosRoast Decaf, it's rich, fragrant, smooooooth, nutty, chocolately, bright-without-being-acidic, in short, wonderful. My caffeine-drinking friends are also fans of RR...AROMA! This stuff is juicy like a butter-basted turkey folks.
(5)Chai M.
RoosRoast coffee is great. You simply have to taste it. John Roos and his staff are obviously in this for more than money or success. There is love in the cup. I live nearby the roast works. I can smell the aroma of roasting beans on the morning breeze. I buy about a pound a month and slowly drink it up, pulling double long shots on my home espresso maker, just the way John serves it in the little cafe down the street. No, not dripped, pulled long and hard. LOL. Fer real, this is good stuff and good community.
(5)E. B.
I've lived in Ann Arbor for six years, and I can definitely say that Roos has the best, most addictive coffee in the city. Period. Bonus: the people here are really friendly.
(5)Ree M.
i'm no coffee connoisseur. really. i like coffee, but i appreciate the buzz more. however, i do know a good tasting cup of coffee and i have only had this experience at RR. I found this place by a little bit of magic. i met john in the whole foods parking lot and ended up having a rather long, intimate conversation with him. he's awesome. a genuine person with a great heart. he told me where the cafe was and i went the next day. he had talked to jessica (the just as like-able and genuine coffee specialist at the store) and she gave me free coffee all weekend (i was there visiting my mom from chicago). I went back a few weekends later and she remembered me! it's the kind of company that has a great vibe and energy. i wish i could find more places like it! shop local...support this place!! oh, and they have good coffee :)
(5)Andrea M.
DECAF DELUXE MMMmmmmm Yes, this is going to be a short review, pointed straight at the heart of decaf drinkers who proudly proclaim "we're here, we drink decaf, get used to it!!!" This is your cup if you want the best and I mean yum, mmmmm, richly roasted oh-so-good decaf coffee. Their decaf blend may be hard to find but you can find it at Kerrytown Market right downtown. The People's Food Co-op sells other varieties but I have yet to see the decaf. At any rate, the decaf is worth every penny and worth savoring every drop. Loyal decafists (uhm, yes that may not be a word) unite on this one- we shall overcome the bland reputation of decaf coffees with RoosRoast leading the way. Carry on! *fist in the air*
(4)Michael W.
Best coffee in Ann Arbor hands down. Lobster butter love beans are my favourite. This place rocks.
(5)SweetP G.
Dear RoosRoast, Just received some Lobster Butter Love in the mail from a friend in A2. I am in loove. From what my friend told me RoosRoast is a fixture in the community and I like that. Keep doin' what you're doin'. Loving you from afar, Noods.
(5)Kyle O.
The perfunctory part is that RoosRoast is making the some of the best coffee you can drink in the midwest and possibly the western hemisphere. I've been sipping on (read: gulping down) some of their fair trade Peruvian and Celebes Kalossi recently, and I can't get enough of them. I can also recommend their trademark Lobster Butter Love (not my favorite, but still excellent), Rich French Neighbor (dark but not burnt, great brewed in a caffettiera), and Cowboy Blend (bright like an Andean sunrise). What takes the RoosRoast experience to the next level is how much love is poured into every facet of the company. The original linoleum prints on the bags, roasted on dates, free espresso when you swing by the shop -- these aren't the services you get from someone who's just trying to make a buck. I've watched the new space on Rosewood develop over the last two months (it's on my way to work), and it's turning into a real location. If John is there, I can pretty much guarantee that you'll get to see the roaster and pick up some very energetic vibes from coffee and proprietor alike.
(5)Allison S.
Yay! I finally found good coffee in Ann Arbor. I only tasted a latte so far but I bought a pound as well. I have yet to brew the beans I bought but I'm so excited about my latte, that I jumped online to give them 5 stars. I heard about this new roaster and knew they were somewhere near Rosewood and Industrial. I was driving down Industrial with my windows closed and my nose led me to their door. Yummy scent, good coffee. Welcome to the hood, RR.
(5)Alex G.
Other reviewers have raved, and friends have suggested RoosRoast as well, so I picked up a bag of Lobster Butter at the Ann Arbor Farmers Market. I lucked into meeting John, who seems to be everything everyone says -- and is certainly among the most enthusiastic people I've ever met -- he's a very likable guy. The coffee itself gets a 10 of 10 for aroma, both in the bag and fresh-brewed in the pot. Overall, the flavor was good, but only good, not knock-my-socks-off spectacular. I went back for a bag of Rich French and found it a bit overwhelming -- really strong, edging toward bitter. I wanted very much to love it -- but somehow I seem to be missing the boat. Perhaps my expectations were set too high. Again, not bad, just not nirvana.
(3)Julie D.
GREAT local coffee roaster. Flavorful, fresh, yum. I like the Lobster Butter Love, myself. Sure you pay $7 per half pound (which yields a lot of pots)...but you'll also pay $2 per cup at the coffee shop for less superior coffee. I like to support local business and I love my coffee! Roos Roast=yum. I hope it always stays this fresh as he grows his business! Also available freshly brewed at many local shops & restaurants around Ann Arbor.
(5)Greg M.
I live in Indiana, so I have to mail order this coffee most of the time - and I think it is a great deal. Shipping for two pounds is around four dollars, and since the coffee is sold in full pounds rather than 12oz bags the price is reasonable. What I love is the fresh roast flavor, I know everything was roasted just before it was sent. My favorites vary, Rich French for sure, Lobster Butter, they are all so aromatic.
(5)Brian C.
Great local-roasted coffee. Pretty sure I'm addicted to Rich French Neighbor. Pretty sure. Each bag has the "roasted-on" date right on there, so you can see when your coffee was roasted (most likely within the last week). John Roos (proprietor) is also great. When I dropped in, he was more than happy to take us into the back of the store and show us his coffee roasting process from start to finish. Try to get that at Starbucks. Coffee's a little pricey if you're not used to paying for upscale coffee, but for me, $7 a half pound is totally justified. It's a little bit hard to find, but well worth it!
(5)P W.
I was wondering if the coffee lived up to the reviews. It really did. I didn't plan on buying a $14 bag. I had a sip of the coffee and did anyhow. My car smells wonderful from it. I may start having the coffee shipped out to me. I will see if it tastes as good brewed at home. Definitely one of the best cups of coffee that I have had in a long while. The owner was a really nice guy. He looked like a young Kris Kristofferson. It was almost uncanny! I wonder if he gets that a lot. People say I look and act like Jay from Clerks etc... so I guess he could have been compared to someone worse. Actually, Kris Kristofferson would be an honor to be compared to. David Allan Coe would also be cool to be compared to.
(5)Kitty C.
Lobster Butter. It's a pricey addition, but it's an addiction worth having. Cannot say enough good things about Roos Roast.
(5)Chad C.
Not a cafe! Simply a good place to get a cup-of-joe to-go or to buy some coffee beans that are roasted incredibly well!
(4)Devon A.
I think we now have four coffee roasters in town, but RoosRoast is still my favorite. I met John a couple of years ago when my wife was enrolled in a yoga program at the neighboring studio. John is crazy energetic, and he is super passionate about his coffee. As mention by others, the fun packaging features some of his artwork. Oh, his muffins are amazing!
(4)Bonnie F.
I love this coffee, especially the Lobster Butter. And when the roast date - stamped on the bag - was just yesterday, I love it even more!
(5)Brian J.
Consistently great/quality coffee. I always have a bag at home or I'm picking up a cup at the Farmer's Market (or there location off S. Industrial when i have time). Everyone I've encountered at the all of their locations has been extremely friendly and professional. For as much as you can spend on a regular cup of coffee at a gas station/restaurant/bar, I find the investment in a bag of Roo's beans worth it. You're simultaneously supporting a local business and purchasing a gourmet product at a reasonable price. If you enjoy the pleasures coffee can bring, do yourself a favor and try a bag of Roo's.
(5)Elise L.
Awesome little spot, hidden away from the crowds....We spent about an hour searching for a parking spot by the University then discovered this awesome little coffee shop that had *free parking* and *wifi* What a relief! Cozy + independent vibe .... definitely recommend it! Oh...they have cold brew coffee too! Watch out, it's strong. :)
(5)Ted W.
I was on my quest to find the mythical best coffee when I stumbled on Roos Roast on Yelp. I immediately checked out his website and was impressed. I, eventually went to Cafe Verde to pick up a bag. My coffee was Ethiopian. I generally prefer African and Indonesian coffee so I was incredibly happy in finding this. When I prepared it the next morning, I found it to be sour and overtly pungent. Perhaps it was that batch. My sister in law agreed with me so I was not losing my mind. I really wanted this to be perfect. Sadly, it wasn't. I am anxious to try another as I really like to support local businesses and John shares my passion for the perfect cup of joe. Hopefully it was just a fluke. Addendum: I wrote John Roos with this information and he informed me that this was Ethiopian Sidamo and was noted for its citrus like flavours. After having tried a Starbucks version, I can now say it was the beans. I would suggest putting a caution sticker on it as the beans are so damn unique that most people will not expect it. It's like grabbing a bottle of water only to discover its lemonade. It's not that you hate lemonade but its the shock that it's not water. Same with these beans. Subsequent to the Ethiopian beans, I have tried the Lobster Butter. Like its name, it is rich and incredibly well roasted. Very complex flavours that make your tongue dance. I have also tried the Italian style and it was equally good. I try a lot of coffee from all over the country and Roosroast is in the upper echelon that I've tried. Make sure you read about the beans and blends on his website before trying them so you are well informed.
(5)Virginia L.
Hey, am drinking Lobster Butter Love as I write. It's good! I've driven by the shop so many times and always thought I should stop in. Now I will. I picked up the LBL at the Farmer's Market this morning and brewed it up to enjoy while unpacking the fresh smells of market purchases. I appreciate a crafted roast and this one doesn't disappoint. More importantly, it's local and we should all pay that little extra to support the people in our community. I may have had a couple coffees that are better, but I'm not going to be back in Seattle anytime soon... I'll try some of the other roasts and I hope they are as good. Your new fan.
(4)Lisa W.
The first time I had the pleasure of trying Roos Roast was at the beloved (now closed) Jefferson Market. I was always satisfied with his roasts, and then actually had the pleasure of seeing his workspace when a friend of mine shared studio space with him at the Yellow Barn. The lingering smell of fresh coffee was phenomenal. If you buy Roosroast in bulk, you can just smell and see the love that goes into it. The bag is designed with his artwork (John Roos is also a folk artist) and sense of humor, and it smells absolutely delish. It is all organic and Fair Trade. Try his Ethiopian roast if you get a chance, but my favorite is the creamy Butter Love.
(4)Mel K.
Wow! Hands down the BEST Caramel Latte I've ever had. I savor every sip of it. It is truly amazing. I don't know how they make it so velvety and creamy. Once you have a drink from here, you will never go back to the "S" word again. I love how this place is located in an industrial area, so unassuming. The owner lets you walk around their roasting room, which is really cool. Please support this local business because I am addicted and want it to be around for a long time.
(5)Jeff R.
John Roos has the knowledge and palate to realize the exact moment a roasted bean is perfect. This gift is essential for roasting coffee. With a 3 to 5 day window on most fresh roasts, having a local roaster nearby should be essential for anyone desiring the best craft roasted coffee. It does not make you a snob, but rather an aficionado and fan. While not all beans yield a universally enjoyable experience, I would definitely trust John Roos and RoosRoast to make the best roasting choice to showcase a particular character in a bean or blend. If you've never experience craft roasted coffee, you should stop by the shop and allow John to serve some samples and learn more about the process.
(4)Mark D.
Just let me rave about this place for a few minutes please. This place is a coffee roasting company, not a coffee shop primarily. Their money comes from distributing coffee beans which are roasted in house. You can imagine what the coffee tastes like. It is located in the industrial side of Ann Arbor on the south side, in a very unassuming building. The only identifying factor is the truck parked outside with the logo. Inside is a hodge podge of different chairs and tables that feels like an attic you decorated when you were 8. The coffee itself is out of this world. I got a latte with skim milk and the coffee in the milk was bold yet still smooth enough to mix in well. Prices weren't too bad either. It seemed like a pretty neighborhood type of joint where everyone that goes there knows each other. I felt not hipster enough to be in the place because I didn't bike there or eat organic free range that day, but I will be back multiple times in the future. Overall: great coffee, great place to chill and get some work done in a strange location.
(5)Abe M.
Coffee doesn't do much for me. Caffeine dependence, stained death, automatic poop, calories (in lattes and such), and price just doesn't outweigh the slight cancer preventing properties that it has. However, note that I give Roos 5 stars. What they do here is magical, and is probably some of the best coffee that I have had ever. The Lobster Butter is an AA classic and the Rich French Neighbor is a delight. If life brings you to Ann Arbor, you must try out some of Roos coffee! Brotips -- patio area is dog friendly, but limited in seating -- pastries are delicious as well. -- They do a great egg burrito for a good price too! -- Most of their brews are dark and heavy, so if you like lighter coffees, you may not have the same affection as me
(5)Jocelyn Y.
Great coffee, some of the best I've had in a long time! They also have a bike-through coffee lane (awesome!), good atmosphere to do work, and reasonable prices. I'll definitely be back! Oh, and the lobster butter love roast is definitely worth the trip!
(5)Josh S.
Good coffee, friendly staff. I had a delicious large cold brew and my wife had a small lobster butter (a charmingly-named roast). Other patrons were very nice, too.
(4)Annette J.
I love Roos Roast. Not only do I love their coffee (which you can find at a variety of outposts in the area) but I love their cafe too. It's an eclectic spot filled with cool things to look at and really friendly people. Seriously, everyone here is always so nice and pleasant. It's inevitable to share a bit of a chat or a quip with the baristas or the cashier (and often times both). They've got tasty latte flavors, exceptional cold brew, and also their non coffee drinks are really lovely too. Their hot chocolate in the winter is clutch and just yesterday, already jumpy and jittery enough thanks to pre-wedding stress, I decided to go super mellow and get a honey steamer (just warm milk, frothed a bit with honey). It was simple and delicious and helped bring my heart rate down quite a bit. I was sad to not get their very awesome coffee but it as nice to have something so soothing in its place. I also like that it's not right downtown or anywhere too congested. That makes parking pretty easy and I've always been able to land a table. Speaking of, there's plenty of seating, a dedicated parking lot, and a few snacks like muffins, brownies, and such to tied you over should you feel peckish. Great place to co-work, great place to take a meeting, or a great place to just come and sit and read a book and sip some delicious beverages in a homey, creative spot.
(5)Jane A.
The Honey Vanilla Latte is to die for. We stopped here based on recommendations after doing the drive from Baltimore to Ann Arbor through the night. My boyfriend had the Lobster Butter but said that mine was better. We decided to come back the next day for more!
(5)Anthony S.
How much do you like coffee? Forget all about your favorite cup from your other favorite cafe and swoop in here for your new favorite cup of joe. This small, yet cozy spot offers up THE BEST Americano I have ever had. On top of that there are all kinds of delicious, organic snacks for you to choose from. My recommendation is to go straight for the date bar. Smooth and packed full of flavor, the date bar was like hosting a date party in my mouth and all of the organic dates were invited! I can't say enough good things about everything I had at Roos. Now it's your turn to host the date party...don't forget to invite me!!!
(5)Meridith H.
The ice bomb (cold brew) is some of the best I have ever tried! Their coffee beans are pricy but worth it. My husband made me a cup using the Rich French Neighbor and it was much better than anything he makes using other french roast beans. They have some seating inside and outside. The walk there and the surroundings aren't very scenic, so be on the lookout for the Roos Roast sign. They have a section of coffee making supplies and nice coffee mugs for purchase. Great to be able to support a local shop!
(4)Laurie D.
I have been here many times and I wish I could write a review without assigning stars because I really just don't know how many to give. I want to write a neutral review. But since yelp classifies 3 stars as "A-OK" I'm going to go with that because I think that's the closest to what I'm going for here. Roos Roast is definitely its own person. The word I've settled on for my experiences here is "intense." Everything about it is intense. Intense can be good or bad depending on how you feel about intensity. Which is why I can't decide on a stars rating. Do you catch my drift? The coffee is intense. SO strong. Even the decaf is intense. I've actually found I'm better off with caffeinated Lobster Butter than I am with decaf espresso, which is pretty wild if you ask me. I love that their vanilla honey latte uses real honey and vanilla extract (although I ordered it with almond milk on a whim and the flavors didn't really mesh. I'd do regular milk next time.) The baristas are intense. Rough around the edges, sassy, loud. You can tell they're having a good time, and I appreciate that even though they seem a bit harsh, they are very patient and always kind to their customers. I used to work at a coffee shop and I have observed some customers here that would have broken my patience back in the day, but I haven't seen any barista here lose their cool. One mark against them is I have heard them use really foul language right in front of kids, which I don't think is cool. I'm all for free speech, but I also am for being considerate of the fact that parents might not want their 4 year olds hearing F bombs in rapid succession. The atmosphere is intense. Unfinished walls, spider webs in the window corners, lots of vibrant art, old pacman machines, real succulents. The music is intense. Loud, upbeat, the baristas often sing along loudly. The smell is intense. They roast their own beans onsite, so you can often smell the burning smell of roasting coffee. Again, I say.. I wouldn't necessarily call any of that bad. I somehow am able to concentrate and still get work done in spite of the intensity. Every time I leave, I wonder if I'll be back, but somehow I return again and again. Oh, I also love that they have a vegetable garden all around the perimeter of the building. Irrelevant to this review, but still a nice touch. So, I'd say go to Roos Roast and see for yourself. If you want to relax in silence and contemplate your life while sipping delicate coffee, maybe Roos isn't your place. But if you just don't care and want to throw caution to the wind, go be intense at Roos Roast. It's probably the best A2 coffee shop outside of downtown.

My first taste of their lobster butter coffee was from a wedding my mom and I attended! She loved it so much we absolutely HAD to find the location the next day to buy some before we headed home But of an unexpected location, but easy to find! Be warned, there's no AC inside :O so grab a table outside (hopefully with shade) If you're buying coffee bags, make sure to use your check in deal!

Lobster Butter Love is my favourite! I love popping by Roos to buy it directly versus going to Whole Foods or other local grocery stores. It's cheaper and fresher if you go right to Roos. I'm not a huge fan of the inside space (it's just TOO cool for me I think. Too cool and often a little too quiet. Maybe I'm just projecting. If I'm being honest I've never sat down inside) but I love sitting outside in the summer. Roos truly is a neighbourhood coffee place. It's super easy to bike there and located on a quiet street with free parking.

LOVE this place. The first time I came here, it was a little bit tucked back from the road but worth the tight parking. As I'm not much of a coffee drinker (!!), I opted for the hot chocolate on this particularly rainy day. And boy was I happy! It was made from REAL cocoa. No packets, no pre-made mix, no shortcuts. The real stuff melted into gooey goodness and mixed with piping hot whole milk. The color and appeal of the hot chocolate in the clear, tall glass it came in was mouthwatering. With foam on top, in real fancy style, it was an amazing experience with that first sip. Beyond the foam, the rich chocolaty phenomenon still leaves me without words. Wanting to savor it for a while, some of the cocoa slowly began to fall to the bottom, literally saving the best for last. The best part? It wasn't crazy sweet, oddly enough. It was the right mixture of real cocoa, whole milk, and just a tad of sweetness that will draw me back every single time I'm just on that side of town. Oh, beyond raving about the hot chocolate, the service is awesome and it's so homey. They encourage you to stay all day, with nooks for reading, catching up with friends, and even playing some video games.

They must brew their coffee every hour or so because I have never had a bad cup of coffee from here! I am in love with their Dark Roast - Timor. Very great flavor that gives you the burst you need to accomplish the tasks on your list for the day! I am thankful to be living near this location and even more thankful they have an online ordering option offered as well!

If possible, definitely try the Honey Vanilla Latte - it may be the best latte I've ever had! And the adorable blue mug it came in made it that much better. As others have said, this is a homey little coffee shop on a quiet street. If a friend had not suggested we meet here, I probably never would have discovered it. But now that I have, I look forward to coming back! Also, get the Avalon sea salt chocolate chip cookie!

I hesitated to review earlier so people will not know about this place. I want all the coffee. For me only. Lobster Butter Love. Rich French Neighbor. A sit down Pac Man Machine. Cool Murals on the walls. Off the path of normal. Great. Coffee. You will become addicted. Also available around town at places like Arbor Farms Market if you so choose to brew at home. The labels on the bags are fantastically weird, as are the people who started this place. I say that with a great admiration for stone cold weirdos. Tons of coffee gifts and affordable little trial size for $5 that will get you addicted. The owner, John, is a regular at AA Farmer's Market as well, going with the motto of Free Speech Coffee. Ann Arbor is no stranger to free speech, and John supports it well. The team is extremely knowledgeable about coffee making/pouring/drinking. Ask them whatever you want to know or if you wish to create a Portlandia episode in your own kitchen. Please, don't go here and drink all my coffee. Thank you.

Ok, so I've always wanted to make a Yelp account to write reviews for the places I frequent and have visited but haven't felt the immediate urge to create one until I came to Roos Roast. I just moved to Ann Arbor from Seattle and didn't notify my small credit union in Seattle about it, when I came in a third time to Roos Roast my card was declined. Naturally, I left to go home and call my bank, I was halfway down the street when a Roos Roast employee named Greg (or Craig, sorry!) rode up next to me on his bike and handed me the coffee I had ordered, for free! I seriously appreciated the gesture and it was absolutely touching. He's definitely a curly haired angel. Anyways! Back to the coffee... They have a great selection of coffee here. They're a local coffee joint which is always a plus for me since larger chains tend to have burnt beans and mediocre coffee. It's a cozy coffee shop with cute local art riddled around the shop. Every time I've been here, I've order something different. You can't go wrong with anything you get here. Aside from the curly haired angel, the staff are all very friendly and helpful which is why I'm giving them 5 stars. Service and coffee is on point.

Shut up. I lived in and moved away from Ann Arbor for how many years now, and I only just now find out about Roos Roast because we, a car full of Asian women (shut it), took a wrong turn yet again and end up driving by the van on this otherwise nondescript street? Cruel mistress. Slow tear roll. So I only spent about ten minutes inside, but they were glorious. TIP #1: Yelp has a Check-In offer for a free coffee or espresso drink (any size!) with purchase of two bags of coffee (also any size?) Check-in offers = wind beneath my wings. Many thanks to the super adorable barista (...Katie?) for indulging my compulsive need to get a deal, and for excellent recommendations. TIP #2: The subsequent latte I had was the BEST LATTE of my life. So I'm no coffee connoisseur, but I do know how easy it is to turn a latte into a glorified milk with a dash of caffeine. This latte was strong without being pushy, smooth and easy without being a pushover. It was fantastic. I will definitely be going back for the espresso blend beans. TIP #3: Lobster Butter Love is worth the hype.

OK, I'm extrapolating based upon one visit, but there's a reason for it. I had the best cup of coffee I've ever had! It was just a pour of a dark roast called Timor something-something, but what great flavor. The price was not outlandish at all, either. The barista was friendly and pleasant and did not seem in any way that he could be condescending. The place is in a really odd spot. It's in an area populated by service industry businesses. I suspect there's a residential section just to the east, but I didn't go that way. Nevertheless, the place was full. It's kind of small, so that's easy to do. The crowd was older, which led me to my nearby residence assumption. The usual percentage lingered over their books/newspapers/laptops. In spite of the location, I will make it a point to go there as amny times as I can.

Wooo000 is this espresso strong. I drink coffee regularly and was a bit taken aback at the flavor. I got the honey vanilla latte and was satisfied, but not obsessed. I think this is just my own taste though, I'm sure others would die over this stuff. The staff was friendly and polite, and I love the Roos Roast mugs you drink out of. You can tell this is a place that has frequent regulars and I understand why. It's a really chill place to get work done or meet up with a friend. The location is a little random and can be hard to find for your first time, so be on the lookout!

This place is hella chic. Its kinda hidden and away from the standard Ann Arbor wanna-be hipster coffee BS around the university. This little hidden gem on the outskirts of the university I think is legit. They have more space than a place like, say Comet Coffee, and the pricing isn't horribly out of this world. They have Avalon baked goods which are 'local' from Detroit and they were pretty good. I got an iced mocha and it's pretty good, right amount of sweet and coffee flavor. My boyfriend got a latte and even though the art wasn't out of this world, the taste was really good - which seems to be losing focus. Who cares about display of latte when it tastes good? I'd hit this place up..buy some beans while you're at it too!
(5)Patrick C.
Very good coffee. If you like sweet, try the Honey Vanilla Latte. There coffee is very strong and the staff is very friendly. The location is kind of hidden and most people won't go towards that area but it is definitely worth the trip out. Bought home some Lobster Butter Love for my chemex. Totally understand the hype now.

So nice to have a place with its own distinctive characteristics, not a chain, not slick, just quiet and quirky! I buy freshly roasted coffee here -- mostly Lobster Butter Love. I use 1/2 pound every couple of weeks and then come back for more. And it's a great place to meet & have a conversation with a friend.
(5)lisa N.
Unbelievably strong coffee. It had a strong effect on me and I could not finish it which has never happened before. So if that's what you're into, do it. The space is small, crowded, and kind of dank, like being squeezed into a rumpus room with a bunch of strangers. But I commend it for being the most counter cultural thing on the east side.

Stumbled upon this special spot on a trip from Boulder, CO. AMAZING honey latte and the dudes behind the counter were great too. I'm here until Friday. Basically, see you tomorrow.

Love this place! The coffee, the people, the ambience everything. Gotta love lobster butter

This is a very homey coffee shop in an unsuspecting area of town. Among various industrial buildings, Roos Roast has a small, yet cozy cafe. There are tables and couches to comfortably have a cup of coffee and a pastry. The Honey Vanilla Latte was especially good. Using honey instead of sugar changes the taste, but in our opinion for the better. The latte was creamy, smooth, and had just the right amount of sweetness. All-in-all it was one of the best latte's we've had. From reading other reviews I'm looking forward to coming back to try pours of their brews!
(5)Irene S.
I'm not even a coffee drinker, but this place rules. Try the half cold brew/hot chocolate!!
(5)Tom H.
Great coffee. IMO the roasts tend to be on the darker side, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. I recently bought the Honduran beans and they are THE best beans I've ever had. If you are at the farmers market be sure to get an iced coffee - it's amazing and showed me what has become my favorite coffee shop in Ann Arbor.
(5)Brad C.
Roos Roast has fantastic coffee and an incredibly relaxed environment. They roast their own coffee in the back of the shop so the freshness of the coffee is guaranteed. The staff is friendly and knowledgable. Their signature "lobster butter love" blend is exceptional and is always available. They also rotate multiple different blends depending on the day. They have a small selection of pastries/treats that are often organic and locally made. The only downside is that it is a bit expensive ($3.25 for a large coffee). However it is definitely worth a try. Pound of coffee is $15.

Wonderful little coffeehouse tucked into a small industrial park but walking distance from neighborhoods. Great coffee drinks, Avalon baked goods, mellow vibe, friendly staff. I like it.

So incredibly delicious!!! Was in Ann Arbor for the fratello's graduation and he said this was the best coffee in town. I like fun latte combinations and was not disappointed! The last time I had a chili latte, I was in Santa Fe and thought I destroyed my taste buds. Curiosity and maybe a little masochism brought me to the Ancho Pancho. It was INCREDIBLE!! Highly recommended! I even convinced my straight espresso drinking brother to get one. He loved it too :)! Went here all three days I was in Michigan. 2 Ancho Pancho's and 1 Honey Latte later.... Not too bad on the wallet and the staff was superbly friendly, even in the face of all the harried graduation goers. I wish I could make this place a regular stop. Come to CT!

I've never felt so instantly at home in a coffee shop. Strong coffee, great snacks, and a really awesome space to chill or work. On this sunny weekday afternoon, it's not crowded at all. Service is prompt and friendly. The seating area is clean, comfortable, and spacious, with lots of electrical outlets. Wifi is fast (seriously, 50 Mbps down/12 Mbps up), the music selection is great (indie and classic rock), and the eclectic decor gives this place more personality than any other coffee shop in Ann Arbor.

This was by far the strongest cup of coffee I have ever sipped in my history of coffee drinking. From the first sip, I was kind of scared. I made it halfway through before I gave up. I'm no quitter, but I could feel the hair growing from my chest and said to myself, "Self, you're getting married soon, there's nobody forcing you to drink this incredibly strong cup of joe that is forcing hair to grow from your chest"...as they say. This is a very cool spot, so one star for the atmosphere/cool vibe. The guy behind the counter, spot on friendly and easy to talk to. The menu looked amazing, another very deserving star. But I needed straight up coffee. Not the best, in my humble opinion, but everyone has different tastes, and this could've easily worked for someone else. Here's what I think needs to happen. They do offer other milk options for dietary needs. But they only offer a crappy almond milk with a laundry list of ingredients added to that (so it's not REALLY clean, fresh, one ingredient almond milk: ALMONDS) and soy milk, which is for the birds. I asked about coconut milk, and sadly, they don't offer it. I would encourage the owners to read labels when offering the non-dairy alternatives because people who generally ask for almond milk or coconut milk want to clean up the diet, and the ingredients should be simple and something that you can pronounce and recognize. All in all, probably wouldn't stop here again, but definitely think it's a cool spot.

Roos Roast was my introduction to good coffee. Years ago, John Roos would do a coffee class at the Yellow Barn and I would walk away jumping out of my skin from all the coffee I had just drank. He also made these muffins that I swear had crack in them...they were these huge ass muffins yet everyone would eat them like they were chips. John is an all-around good guy and his love for all things Bean shows through in everything he does. The cafe is a lot of fun to hang out in...one of my friends has stared a geek coffee klatch there and it fits in perfectly. If you can't get to the cafe, I'd recommend getting a cup from the farmers' market or Argus Farm Stop. Two former Roos employees work at Argus and you will get a fine cup!

Roos Roast is a dream. Cute, tucked away coffee shop that's never quite super busy. Beautifully hand-lettered, DIY aesthetic in every corner of the store. It really feels like the owners meant to design a home away from home primarily and a place to sell stuff secondarily. Lobster Butter Love is my jam.

This place is great. I had a cappuccino and a brownie, both were really good. The prices are fair for the quality of their products. As for the service, the barista was beyond friendly.
(5)Chris C.
Bottom line: Local business, awesome coffee. I've been to the Roos Roast HQ only once, but met the quirky namesake John Roos -- a very fun and well-caffeinated man! It's a little out of the way in a residential area, but definitely worth a visit. For your convenience, the beans are available all over town: Sparrow Market, the Farmer's Market, Plum Market, and Babo's to name a few. Luxuriate in the Lobster Butter Love over a lazy Sunday, mmmmmm. Then use the AA Cowboy Blend to kick your teeth in on Monday morning. Yeehaw! You will NOT be disappointed.
(5)Shane M.
Well this place is awesome. This is the type of local business where you can tell that everyone cares about producing a quality product in a responsible way. Here's the run down: 1) Fair trade - 'nuff said 2) Skilled baristas 3) Friendly and not pretentious baristas (not as common as you would think) 4) Grade A Latte 5) Amazing roasted coffee 6) They have many health conscious options (gluten free, soy alternatives, etc) 7) Cozy environment

When I lived in Ann Arbor, I could smell when Roos Roast was roasting from the minute I walked outside my apartment. This was not a bad thing. Here are some more things that are not bad things: Roos Roast gave me a t-shirt when I left Ann Arbor (full disclosure). Roos Roast pulls shots that are as a) consistent and b) tasty as when I've gone to fancy-pants expensive sleek modern hipster coffee joints in San Francisco, Oakland, Brooklyn, Chicago, Denver, Boston, Salt Lake City, Portland, or Atlanta. Often better. Also, at least as good as some of the less-pretentious coffee nerd shops I've been to in the same cities. Roos Roast has free wifi. Roos Roast helped pick out at least 4 of my Christmas presents, and then suggested decaf options when my husband started overdosing himself on caffeine with his shiny new Aeropress. Roos Roast let me listen in on all kinds of only-in-Ann Arbor conversations, and if desired, participate in them (except for all the ones about bikes, I know nothing about bikes). Roos Roast not only allowed, but adored my dog. And vice versa. Post-move, my dog keeps giving us sad puppy eyes every time we say the word coffee, because suddenly it doesn't mean "let's take a 5 minute walk to go see all your friends, dog!" Seriously, it's pathetic.

Great coffee shop! Odd location, but worth a drive to find. Given I had heard so much about the Lobster butter love coffee, I ended up getting a pound. The barista was so kind in that she asked me how I wanted the coffee ground and I said I had a Keurig and she ground it so I can use it in my reuseable Keurig filter. Given I bought a pound and checked in on Yelp, I got a free drink. I ended up getting a mocha, which was excellent. I hate how regular Mocha's are way too chocolate-y and rich. This was smooth with a dark, high quality chocolate taste. I would get it again! The coffee shop is small, but has some seating available and offers yoga (bring your own mat) on Saturdays. They don't have a huge menu, but have coffee, mocha, cappucccino, and desserts/muffins. The staff were very cool. This place is worth a visit!

I love this place :) Great coffee, Avalon baked goods, friendly staff, and comfortable seating area. Well worth the trek from downtown!
(5)Sydney N.
First time here - very impressed! Great environment for light studying (reading). Had a large dark roast and it was great. Protein balls and Magic Bar also delicious! Not a ton of space but was able to find a spot. Would recommend to students who need an off campus spot to study and grab a coffee!
(5)Wendy K.
So quaint and they have an interesting selection of drinks. I just wish they had a better selection of pastries. Even when I've gone there hungry, I couldn't bring myself to buy any of their pastries. Overall, a good place to study or read a book.
(4)Matthew M.
Great Coffee! Friendly Staff with out of this world positive energy! Unpretentious funky hip vibe! GO!
(5)Darrell Y.
These guys are my go-to roaster. They have beans that are not on the regular online store that I'm not even going to name because I want them all to myself. I could go to any number of roasters in Chicago, but I buy online from Roos Roast because they are the best.
(5)Amanda B.
Love Roos! First of all, the Honey Almond Latte is among the best caffeinated beverages I've ever had - it had just the right balance of milk, espresso and sweetness. The almond bread was yummy too. Mainly I appreciated the fact that the staff wasn't pretentious or blasé - they were very welcoming. It made for a very laid back atmosphere. We grabbed some of the famous Lobster Butter Love to go and I can't wait to try it!
